Backgrounds: Drawesome Pictures

This is not the entire process of making the backgrounds for Prospan - but parts of it. I am showing this, because I love watching work in progress myself and thought perhaps others too would find this interesting. On this production, I was trying out different medias for the backgrounds and in a way each sketch and painting on the way is an individual piece of art - at least I'd like to think so - and I think they deserve to be mentioned as they were an important part of the process. This was a labour intense but fun project to work on and I was really relieved to get away from the computer and work with paint and paper as much as I did!

Black and white thumbnails:

These black and white layouts are based on the clients thumbnails. They helped me to plan the compositions and later on the values became very useful, as well.

Pencil drawings for the client:

In this case, the client wanted to see some pencil drawings of where the project was going... These were useful to me as well, because I went into detail with the background. And drawing by hand instead of computer is much more fun and ads something different to the final look. I also find that I have more patience with my work, with a pencil in my hand :)

Colour keys:

Colour keys are essential planning, before even thinking about colouring the original piece!!! It saves me time (and the client money), making a quick colour key, and that way I can test many ideas in a short time, instead of killing myself over hours of failed attempts on the original piece.
The challenge was for me to decide what colour palette to use for the night locations, with the moon as the only light source. I learned that you can do whatever the heck you want, so all I had to do was chose and feel and try and change and decide... in which direction to.

Watercolour:

In this particular case, I felt brave and gave it a go with the watercolours. The client wanted a Disney feel to their short - and I thought watercolour was the right medium for that. I painted with a single colour because I am new to this media and then I applied parts of the painting as effect layers in Photoshop, for texture and depth.

4 weeks later... and a little bit of Photoshopping:)

Exhibition - "SNAPSHOT"

I am delighted to tell you, that 4 of my paintings, has been selected for the SNAPSHOT exhibition at the Grant Bradley Gallery, in Bedminster. The exhibition will be showing art work from 16 Bristol based artist, from February 4.- 25. 2012.

Morfar Knud

This is a portrait of our Grandfather, Knud.
He is 92 years old and lives next to the farm where he lived with his wife, and raised 5 children. My grandfather was a farmer and his beautiful wife would always wear pretty dresses with colourful flowers. The farm is now run by his oldest son, Rune. It's not far from the North Sea - the far West of Jutland.

My sister, Dorthe Bækby Olesen, has taken the photograph to the left and I have made the illustration on the right side. We gave this to him for Christmas. I think he liked it - but as he said: "If I want to look at myself, I will find a mirror." Narcissism is not a big thing in Jutland.

There's a Boy in My Garden"

Once again I have painted my garden. This very English garden full of flowers and herbs, with an old victorian building next to it, creates a really lovely atmosphere. I love my garden and spend a lot of time there with Viggo. There used to be a fox living here as well and I wonder what he was thinking every time he could see us playing there.

Strandfogeden, Hendes Hund og Min Far

Danmarks første kvindelige strandfoged, var min oldemor.

Hun hed Anna. Hun fik 11 børn, hvor den yngste kom til at hedde Elva og det var min bedstemor. De boede på Bækbygård som ligger ved Husby klitterne med havet brusende lige på den anden side. Her på billedet er det min far som går med min oldemor i hånden på stranden. Jeg har ladet mig inspirere af et billede som kom i avisen i slutningen af 1950'erne - da der blev skrevet en lille artikel om oldemor.

Nu er det min bedstemors storebror Viggo Bertelsen, der bor på Bækbygård og holder øje med havet og hvad der kommer ind - selvom han nu er pensioneret. Min søn er bla. opkaldt efter ham.

DRAWESOME PICTURES has teamed up with Producer Ellen Riis, BASMATI FILM, and our goal is to finish the short film "Skål Viola!" and get her ready for screening, early next year.

Skål Viola has been granted 30.000 DKK by ANIS, for that very same purpose and now we are closer than we have ever been to show the world a little film that will hopefully make a big difference.

I made this sketch, for a project that I am working on at the moment, with David Tart. This character is not going to appear in the story, so I guess it's ok to bring him out in the light here. I got inspired from a painting by N. C. Wyeth - and turned him into a friendly toony doctor. I love N. C. W!! My plan is to make a big portrait of my dad - having chopped down every tree on the West coast. Proudly and peacefully watching his work at the end of the day...

"Hulda og Jens Peter"

Hulda and Jens Peter are a nice old couple. They appeared on the canvas this summer when I was on holiday with my parents in the far West of Jutland. We had been visiting lots of family - and I think they have inspired me:) Big noses, big hearts!

THE STORY OF ANIMATION

I have learned the hard way that making B/W thumbnail before anything else - is a good plan! The B/W thumbnails help me get the compositions sorted and the values of course - before moving on to painting with acrylics. The guys at Tumblehead has made me lots of concept artwork and colour keys to follow - straight forward!

My work is done now - and the rest of the crew will be sweating until late September. It has been a real treat to work work with the Tumbleheads and I hope to be able to do this again very soon! Thanks to the whole crew for being a great inspiration and making my work so much easier!

There's a fox in my garden!

...it lives in the far corner of my garden! When the sun is shining he comes out to rest in the warmth. For the auction at the Open Studio/ JSA I have been working on this picture. I am a bit surprised with the outcome, but I guess we will have to see what people think about it. :)

The Story of Animation

At the moment I am working on a project which should hopefully get us animation people some more work on our hands in the future. It's a short film, directed by David Tart, the production company behind is Tumblehead who has gathered some really talented concept artists and animators - and I'm on board to paint the backgrounds. Open Studio - JSA

Hello there!

The Jamaica Street Artists invite all friends to the Open Studio Weekend 2011. We will all be turning our work spaces into little galleries - 40 in total - so show up and see works from illustrators, painters and film makers. I will be setting up a small cinema with red curtains and popcorn - where you can see animated shorts, commercials and possibly a documentary by Mark Kidel - who's work is admired by many!

Cappechino Animation hired me to do all the background work on this commercial for a medicine company in South Africa. The product is a cough medicine, called Prospan.

My friend Maahir Pandie did a big chunk of the animation. All done in 6 weeks!

Cheers Viola! will be screened for the first time!

The Alcohol Conference takes place on May 5th. in Viborg, Denmark, where politicians and decision makers have been invited to talk about and get more insight in the lives of alcoholics, former alcoholics and children of alcoholic parents.

The purpose is to get focus on the work with children in families with problem drinking. How to approach parents when you, as a nurse, teacher or childminder sense that something is wrong in a home.

Children are very loyal to their parents and will in many cases blame themselves for their parents' problems - but it's important to get a dialogue with these children as early on as possible, to help them put words on their emotions, and hopefully get a better start on adulthood.

This film is meant to be a part of the discussion with the children, a tool for social workers and an eye opener to parents.

Here's some very early and rough work, from our film "The Wind on Cypress Hill". It's a stop motion short film, developed by Christophe Peladan and myself. We went to China to produce this film together with The Jilin Animation School in the spring 2009 and the purpose was to show it at the Changchun Animation Film Festival in September 2009. We got a lot of help from co-director/animator Ludovic Berrardo - while students and teachers from the school were building props and sets. Great adventure!

is the name of my business. And it's just me. I have taken various jobs and this is the latest project that I have worked on. This was developed with Mie Dissing, Dissing Grafisk and Erik Pold, Erhvervenes Hus, Viborg.
